Dog Stories
^^^^^^^^^^^
Found Dog
I found a dog recently at a very busy intersection in San
Jose, California. I did everything possible to find her
owner, but never did. She seems to be adjusting well to
living with me, but I do not understand how she can jump my
fence (no matter how I try to prevent it) and stay on my
porch, but when she jumped her old fence she got lost. She's
more at home now as she has decided that it is her job to
groom my cat. The cat seems to enjoy it and has actually
started to groom her back.
Lost Dog/Found Dog
The Old English Sheepdog of a friend of mine died after a
sudden illness. Within the next month, a beautiful lost dog
of the same breed arrived at her ranch and settled right in.
She tried diligently to find the owner, but no one ever
claimed her. The two dogs are incredibly similar!
Homeward Bound
A friend of mine was driving down a road and saw a German
shepherd wandering in a driveway, looking for food. He
stopped and the shepherd and a Lab came towards him. He
opened his back door and the shepherd jumped in. The Lab
walked back a few feet and barked, as if he wanted my friend
to go somewhere. Then the Lab ran. My friend closed the car
door with the shepherd in it and followed the Lab. The Lab
stopped in front of a house. My friend stopped and got out of
his car. The Lab gently took my friend's hand and pulled him.
My friend followed the lab. The Lab led him to a third dog
who was lying very injured on a lawn. My friend picked up
the injured dog and pick her in his car and then the Lab
jumped in. The injured dog had to be put down but the other
two are now in Long Island and are going to be delivered to a
good home.
A Rock Hound
I guess this is kind of a tribute to our "Puppy Puppy"
whom we lost to cancer on October 11. His favorite thing
was to find large rocks in the back yard, which is about half
an acre, and to dig them up and bark at them. We would hear
him barking like crazy and think something was wrong only to
discover "Puppy Puppy" digging up another rock. He often
brought them into the house to show us. Today we found two
of our other dogs playing with rock that we had put into
their toy box. It made it seem like "Puppy Puppy" was still
with us in some way. He was a loveable, funny dog. We miss
him.
Crazy Hound
We have a Basset Hound, and every day when she eats her
dry food, he tips the bowl over so all the food goes
everywhere. She does this everyday, and then she pushes the
bowl around the room
Katie
Our dog Katie is a 15 month old Doberman. She is so
funny! She loves to sleep on the bed, and once she is up
there, the only way to get her off is to hold the telephone
to her ear. She is afraid of the telephone!! Her
"grandfather " has a pair of slippers that look like whales,
and Katie has chosen the left one to be her "baby!" First she
chewed off just a little piece of it, and now whenever she
thinks no one is paying attention, she goes and gets the same
slipper, and carries it around in her mouth! She never rips
it, which is odd, because she loves to tear up stuffed
animals whenever she gets the chance. By the way, Dobermans
are extremely loyal and good natured dogs. So the next time
you see us coming, you don't have to cross the street!
My Name Is Oliver
We purchased a chocolate Lab last may from who we
thought was a reputable breeder only to find out through the
AKC that he was a Texas puppymill dog!!! Naturally we were
devastated finding out that our new family member was so
cruelly treated for the first 10 weeks of his life. My
husband and I decided we needed to show him the way life
should have been for him and hoped he would soon forget all
he knew before he met us. Together with our veterinarian we
watched for signs of ill health and now 8 months and 80
pounds later, Oliver is living "the life of Riley" he is a
beautiful healthy Lab who is full of energy. We are very
thankful we stumbled upon a one in a million puppymill dog
who turned out so well. Any true dog lover will agree,
PUPPYMILLS must be shut down!!!!! no living thing deserves
to be treated in such a way.
TV (Dachs)Hound
Dogs aren't supposed to be able to see in 2-D, but our
miniature Dachshund, Miss Lillian, goes wild in front of the
TV. She loves all programs & commercials with dogs, herds of
anything, and especially weasels, minks, and badgers
(remember doxies were bred to hunt badgers and rabbits). She
whines, barks, runs up to the TV, jumps up for a better look,
then runs around the back when the on-screen animal
disappears, trying to find out where it's gone...This is a
true story! Any other Dachshund owners out there? I've had
dogs all my life (Chihuahuas, Boxers, Lhasas, Schnauzers
and Dachshunds are the best - E.B. White agrees.)
Chance For Chancey
This past September my police officer husband was making
his regular patrol on the downtown University campus.... it
was around two in the morning when a car that had just come
off the interstate got behind him and started flashing their
lights. My husband pulled over and cautiously got out of his
car, (in downtown Birmingham you really do have to be
careful). An elderly man in the other vehicle told my
husband about a dog he had just seen get hit by a car up on
the interstate. Being the animal lover he his my husband
immediately turned his patrol car around and went up on the
interstate, lights and siren on he proceeded to go south in
the northbound lane to find the dog.
It was two o'clock in the morning so he really wasn't
worried about traffic. Not more than a mile from the
entrance/exit ramp, cowering in the median against the
concrete barrier was a small yellow dog... no more than ten
pounds. My husband taking all precautions of course wrapped
her in his jacket and put her in the back of the patrol car.
At the station he examined her and the only injury he could
find was a sore leg. The two bonded immediately.
Six o'clock on a Saturday morning my husband comes into
the bedroom "Honey...." he whispered quietly. "Honey....
I've got a surprise for you..." Sleepily I sit up and there
on my bedroom floor sits a little body with the softest
almond shaped, blonde lashed brown eyes looking hopefully up
at me. The first words out of my mouth were "Honey what have
you done?" The little dog proceeded to jump on my bed...
covered in "road dirt". Later that morning after we fed her
and examined her some more.... my husband and I lay down to
have some more sleep.
In a dream I saw the puppy.... on the road... she just
kept walking and walking down a loooooooong road. I kept
hearing "Chancey... chancey....." I woke up and knew that
would be her name. Chancey was examined by our vet the
following Monday and we discovered that her leg was only
bruised. She had no worms and no mites, (to our surprise).
He estimated her to be about four months old and said she
would probably grow to be a little smaller than a Lab. She
has short blonde hair and a Retriever face with a Lab body,
so we thought what he said was a good prediction. She has a
curly tail, (don't know where that came from).
Chancey has grown and grown and is now just a little
smaller than our black Lab. She is made to be an inside dog!
She has the softest eyes I've ever seen...they could melt
the heart of anyone...well, almost anyone. The anyone I'm
speaking of is the person that deliberately stopped their car
to dump her on the busy interstate. There is almost no
possible way she could have wandered up there on her own....
she had to have been dumped.
Everytime I think of that horrible day and night for her
it breaks my heart. Imagining how petrified she must have
been....cowering in the median after being bumped my
someone's tire. I get so mad at someone who could do
something so horrible! There is NO EXCUSE FOR PEOPLE LIKE
THAT!!!!! Since Chancey, my husband has brought home four
more animals he has found while on duty....we started out
with two cats and two dogs and now have four of each. I
couldn't live with out any one of them now....and they all
have a little story behind their adoption by us. But my
favorite is little Chancey.........
My Dog Rags
We think Rags was meant to be a farm dog. My sister
takes horseback riding lessons, and when we drive her up to
the barn, we bring Rags. Well, as soon as we hit the gravel
road, Rags starts whimpering and trying to jump through the
window. When we finally let him out, he runs like the wind,
playing with the horses and having a grand old time. It's so
hard to get him back in the car, but the next time, all we
have to say is "Wanna go for a ride?" and he's in the car in
a flash!!
Photogenic Doggie
Mollie, a Sheltie, loves having her picture taken. She
poses and even "smiles". Of course she always looks like
she is smiling up at you. She doesn't move until the flash
goes off and she knows she is a star!!!
George - The Wiry Terrier
George has been with us for almost 7 years now. He has a
nana (blanket) under the entry table and on the end of the
bed for sleeping on. He always can be found napping in
either of these two spaces. Last week we purchased some new
kitchen carpets and bathroom mats. I was looking for him and
he was nowhere to be found. Being he's a runner, I
panicked and thought he was accidentally let out. I went by
the bathroom and saw him laying on the new tub mat in the
shadows of the darkness.
He was sound asleep. I guess it is quieter, darker, and
much cooler in there. Now that it is getting warmer here
(in California - 72 degrees!) The past few days, he has been
camping next to the tub - so much that he has to be stepped
over after our showers! He has always taken peeks and
dropped in toys while we were showering, but this is
ridiculous! Does anyone else have a fox terrier? They are
the best! Fiesty, curious and wired!!
I Love My Doggies
My dogs are my best friends. My husband and I have
always had dogs and when we married we found a stray kitten.
We now have three dogs (L. Van Beethoven, a Poodle/weiner dog
mix; Tasha Yar, a Shepherd/Lab mix; and Lord Springstein
of Cuddleville, a liver and white English Springer Spaniel)
and Tiger Lily the peach colored tabby cat. We all live
together in a very small house, and everyone likes to sleep
on the bed (in winter it gets very cold in Western
Massachusetts).
All of our "kids" have very different personalities and
are special. Tiger is a dog wanna-be. Mr. Beethoven is an
old timer at age 10. Springstein is a real cuddle guy, I
think because he was an abused doggy before he came to our
home. And our "baby" Tasha Yar is 75 lbs of play, eat, chew,
play more, bark at the cat, play some more, eat something she
shouldn't, chew a shoe or baseball glove, etc..I think you
get the picture!!
Texas Dogmom
My husband and I own two stray dogs. One shepherd
mix and a terrier/hound mix. They watch our every move in
the morning and go crazy when we put on our shoes. (This is
the all important signal) There is a park in Austin that has
about a 1 mile leashless area with trees, hills, and a creek.
Without fail, rain or shine, we are there every morning. We
know it's a good morning if the dogs give it four stars
(dripping wet, ears folded back, smiling, and a foamy chin).
This is great for us since we work all day. The city
supports the park, and we have a Dog Owner's Association that
helps with the upkeep of the park. I really recommend it. By
the way...I love the dog stories. Dogs are truly wonderful.
Ours are a joy.
Bath Lovin' Bulldog
From my experience, most dogs HATE baths. We have a
baby bulldog that has shown us this is not true! Every time
the bath water starts running, she is right there, waiting.
If it is one of US and not her that is getting in the tub,
she sticks around anyway. While the shower is going you
can see her head full of shark teeth chomping away at any
stray waterdrops coming her way! She usually leaves the
bathroom, but when the water stops running she comes right
back in to dry off the bottom half of our legs!
A Special Closeness-Maddie
I don't know if my story can exactly be called
remarkable, but it has made me the dog lover I am today.
When I was 11 years old, a small, red hound-mix puppy
wandered into my yard. She was timid and afraid of anyone
and anything-anyone that is, except me. I don't know why,
but from the very beginning, the puppy cringed away from
everyone else in my family and ran to me. Needless to say,
the dog immediately won my heart. I named her Maddie, and
she is now 8 years old.
My Maddie never leaves my side. She never had to be
trained with a leash because she never wanted to be far from
me. She waits outside the bathroom door while I shower,
stares out the windows and whines while I am away, and obeys
no command unless it comes from my lips. Maddie seems to
understand every word I say, and every feeling I feel-she
plays when I am playful and lays in my lap when I am sad. My
Maddie even barks jealously if anyone hugs me! Like I said,
I don't know if this story is remarkable, but I could never
ask for a better dog.
Goofy German Shepherd!
I knew a very unusual German shepherd who lived in Santa
Barbara, California. He climbed up and down a palm tree to
fetch sticks. He scruffled about high up in the palm fronds
until he found it, then snatch it - take a few minutes to
situate himself just so, and then take a flying leap onto the
sand! On other days, he'd dig 10 by 3 feet by 2 feet,
L-shaped trenches on the beach. They we're ALWAYS L-shaped!!
On some summer evenings, he'd swim way out into the ocean
until sundown, then come to whoever had a beach campfire
going. He shivered and whimpered until someone threw a coat
or sleeping bag over him.
Domestic Dog
I just read about a dog who gets up on his hind legs and
takes napkins and dish towels from the kitchen countertop.
He then hides them! The same dog opens the kitchen
cabinets, gets all the stuff out (pots, pans, whatever) and
plays with them!!
Thank You
I have really enjoyed reading all of the stories of
other special families like ours. It is so good to know that
there are people out there who know how important the love of
a pet is. Pets give their love so freely it is a shame when
someone doesn't know how special that is. Thank you, America
Online for your thoughts and stories. Anonymous. And, a
special thank you from me, Linne Bailey, for all of you who
have contributed!
